The Guide For Newbies

    Newbie guide By -=Vicious=- R^A_V_E^N-X

Reproduced with the kind permission of Clan Vicious

I am just going to answer a lot of the typical Newbie questions I see all the time on the alt.game.half-life.counterstrike News Group.   I will also, get you down-pat with all the fancy lingo you hear in the newsgroups and in the game its self.  Plus, I am going to provide you with some beginner training so you can at least be a good team mate and not get into anybodies way.  So lets get started ...

    Counter-Strike Lingo:

If you play a lot or if you only play once in a while its always good to know what the heck everybody means when then say OMG or LOL so here is a little guide to the all of that.
    • LOL: Laughing Out Loud - Usually happens when somebody says or does something funny.

    • ROTFLMAO: Rolling On The Floor Laughing My Ass Off - Just like LOL, but this means it was really funny and you cant stop laughing.

    • OMG: Oh My God - Usually said when somebody cant believe how they didn't kill the person they were shooting at.

    • NT: Nice Try - Usually said when you almost get the last kill or just about to defuse the bomb and it blows up in your face.

    • N1: Nice 1 (one) - Usually said when you get the last kill or when you complete the objective.

    • SMG: Submachine Guns - This is the class that goes to the; the MP5Navy, the TMP, the P90, the Mac10, and the UMP45

    • AWP/M: Arctic Warfare Pistol/Magnum - Per-retail release this was known as the AWP, in the retail release they changed it to AWM. Either or it is acceptable.

    • GJ: Good Job - This is the same as Nice Job.

    • GG: Good Game - do we really have to explain this one.

    • T: Terrorist - The enemy.

    • BRB: Be Right Back - Self explanatory.

    • FHMJ - Fragg Happy Moronic Jackass.  Some one who's idea of CS is to kill all involved, and forgets that there is actually and OBJECTIVE.

    • CT: Counter-Terrorist - The good guys.

    • H: Hostage - You have to rescue them not kill them.

    • FB: Flashbang - A good way to blind your enemy (or your own team).

    • SG: Smoke Grenade - A good way to cover up an approach.

    • AFK: Away From Keyboard - Self explanatory.

    • HPB: High Ping Bastard(s) - Self explanatory.

    • LPB: Low Ping Bastard(s) - Self explanatory.

    • M8: Mate - as in "Thanks Mate"

    • TK: Team Killers - When somebody on you own team kills you.

    • WTF: What The F**k - Usually said when you die by "unknown" means.

    • FF: Friendly Fire - Usually you will see this followed by "On" or "Off".  It means that you can shoot your team mates (on) or you cant (off).

    • BTW: By The Way - Usually means you had another thought.

    • ALT Fire: AlterNet Fire - Just about every weapon has it.

    • FPS: (1) First Person Shooter (2) Frames Per Second -
      (1) Describes any game where you are "looking through the eyes".
      (2) Describes how many frames you get for every second of action that goes by, this is usually followed by a number.  The lower this number is the harder it gets to play, the higher the number is the better.

    • HL: Half Life - The game.

    • CS: Counter-Strike - The game.

    • AGHLCS - Acronym for the News Group: alt.games.half-life.counterstrike

    • CP: Choke Points - This describe an area of the map where the most fire fights take place.

    • PB - Short for PUNK BUSTER.  This is an anti-cheat software that has been hacked.  Negating it's effectiveness.

    • ATM: At The Moment - OR a place to get some quick cash.  For a larger withdrawal, use an HE Grenade.

    • IRL: In Real Life - you might see "IRL, I'm better with the AK-47 then I am with it in CS"

    What version to get?

The question I see a lot is what version of CS to get, the downloadable one or the boxed version (which I will refer to as retail).
    • Half-Life+ Counter-Strike: The best part about this is you also get to play one of the best FPS's ever made, the down side is HL+CS takes up a lot of hard drive space and that CS is a huge file to download off the Internet so unless you have a high speed broadband access its going to take you a while to get it all.

    • CS Retail: With the retail version you don't need Half-Life installed to play it so it takes up less hard drive space, but you will have some downloading to do. First off go to www.counter-strike.net/downloads and get the 1.1 patch then go to <http://www.nextwish.org/mods/misc/cstrike-weaponnamesfix.shtml> and download the name fix that changes all of the weapon names to all of the weapons so when somebody says Desert Eagle you will know what weapon they are talking about also, while you are there get the map fix (<http://www.nextwish.org/mods/misc/cstrike-mapfix.shtml>).  This adds all the maps that were missing from 1.1 patch. Also, the Retail version doesn't offer a single player mode (like HL does) but it does offer a beginners training mode that teaches you to how defuse bombs, rescue hostages, and basic shooting skills.

    The Weapons:

CS has a great assortment of weapons to choose from. I was going to make a huge chart about the weapons but a web site beaten me to it. So please go to <http://www.planethalflife.com/counter-strike/csinfo/weapons/chart/>  for everything you wanted to learn about every weapon in the game. What I am going to do is to make comments on each of the weapons.  This is only my opinion so please don't hold it against me.  I ranked each weapon to a typical Newbies taste.  Five of these means its the best weapon in the game and should be bought when you have enough cash.  One of these means to avoid this weapon at all cost no matter how broke you are.  A "T" off to the side means its a Terrorist only weapon, a small "CT" means its a Counter-Terrorist weapon only.

    USP45 (CT starting weapon) -
A really weak pistol that shouldn't even be used, if you want a stronger pistol then buy either the Desert Eagle or the 5-7. The silencer is a nice touch just in case you do get behind your enemy you can kill them without alerting his team mates.

    Glock 18C (T starting weapon) -
This weapon is only power when used in the alt fire mode which lets you fire three bullets at once. The only problem is, its rate of fire is so slow that by the time you are ready to shot again you are dead by somebody who was smart enough to spring for the Desert Eagle or the SIG P-228. I gave this weapon 2 stars because of the power of the alt fire.

    Desert Eagle (AKA Deagle) -
This is the most power weapon in the game with a very high rate of fire, but there are two down sides. One being the 7 bullet clip by the time you have reloaded you will most likely be dead. The second is the reloading its self, the reload to me is kind of slow for a pistol (but not slower then the Duel Beretta's). I deducted 1 star because of the clip size and the slow reload time.

    SIG P-228 -
This is another very good pistol that doesn't get used a whole hell of a lot. It has a lot of power with medium accuracy. This is one of the best side arms in the game that doesn't get a lot of attention. I did deduct 1 star for the reserved ammo, I feel its not enough for a typical Newbie who will miss a lot.

    (T) Duel 96G Beretta's -
Wow, for two pistol this weapon sure is weak. With 120 bullets in reserve trust me you are going to need them, you wont be able to hit anything with these let alone get a kill. I clocked the reload speed and it came in at a little under 30 seconds .. that is really bad for close combat and with the low accuracy its really bad for far away combat also. I gave one star for each pistol.

    (CT) Five-Seven (5-7) -
When I first used this weapon I thought it kicked ass, but now that I am a little wiser I noticed that the power to this pistol is very low but it does have a great rate of fire with 100 bullets in reserve and very high accuracy, If you were really good with this weapon you could probably could snipe with it. I deducted two stars for the poor power and the reload speed which is kind of slow.

    M3 Super 90 -
I don't use shotguns at all because I suck with them, but I was playing against a friend of mine and figured what he heck and i tried it out.  This shotgun sucks, it's only really good for close combat.  If you can ambush somebody its good but other then that it's pure crap.  STAY AWAY FROM THIS WEAPON.  I deducted 4 stars for its power & rate of fire, really low reserve ammo and the fact that you have to be really close to take any real damage. This reason why I didn't give it zero stars is because of its pure power. One shot from this up close and the person is dead, it don't matter how much health or armor they have - they are dead.

    XM1014 -
If you are going to choose which shot gun to buy then go with this one, it has a high rate of fire and its powerful but like the other shotgun (or I like to call them s***guns) it has low reserve ammo and really bad power over a distance. I gave this one 2 stars because of its rate of fire.

    MP5-Navy -
If there is a supreme weapon in CS then it goes to the MP5Navy. The Mp5 is without a doubt the best all around weapon in CS. Very high rate of fire mixed in with a fast reload speed and medium power makes this my favorite weapon in the game and a newbies only choice for a primary weapon. Tip: The Mp5+Deagle combo is the greatest combo of any weapons in the game. You could weaken them with the Mp5 then finish them with the Deagle or you could weaken them with the Deagle then finish them with the Mp5. Either way, major ownage.

(CT)Tactical Machine Pistol (AKA TMP) -
When you first use this weapon you might think it is crap, well its not. Its actually a very powerful weapon when in the right hands. It has a very high rate of fire and very good accuracy. Its a headshot maker, when used right. I did deduct a star for its low power, but it is a really good and under used weapon so if you cant afford an Mp5 with ammo then go for this with for ammo.

    P90 -
This weapon is good but only for close combat. It has a high rate of fire but unlike the other SMG's the recoil is horrible if it was possible this weapon would recoil so bad you would end up shooting yourself in the face. With a high rate of fire and high power this weapon is sub-par compared to the MP5, it does have a 50 ammo clip which is good for clearing a room but with 100 bullets in reserve and the slow reload time its not really worth it. I deducted 2 stars for its recoil and the slow reload time.

    (T)Mac-10 - 1/2
This is the Terrorist version of the TMP, except its power is really high. Like the P90 though the recoil is horrible, the accuracy is low to medium and the range is almost non existent. I deducted three stars because of the recoil, the reserved ammo, and the range. I did add half a star because the reload is high which is great for the those really tight situation.

    UMP45 -
This weapon is just like the MP5 but with slower rate of fire and a small clip, but it does do more damage and with a medium to long range.  And with the accuracy fairly high it is a good all around weapon, not quite as good as the MP5 but defiantly a contender.  I did deduct one star for its slow reload.

    (T)AK-47 -
This is the mother of all rifles, really high power and if you shoot in controlled bursts the accuracy is very high but if you go ape sh*t with it the accuracy is very low.  I do really wish there was more then 90 for reserve ammo but this is a great weapon only in the most capable hands.  I deducted 2 stars because if you were a Newbie then you wont be able to hit anything that is far away and the reload is slow to medium so its not that great for the close quarters battles.

    (T)SG-552 Commando - 1/2
This is my favorite weapon in the game, it has a really high power and the range is very long so its good for sniping plus it has a 2x zoom so it makes it even easier. The recoil is good only in controlled bursts and even in full auto you could still score a headshot or two. I did deduct half a star for the slow reload speed.

    (CT)M4A1 Carbon -
This is the greatest of all the files in the game, really high power with really good accuracy and the silencer just adds a touch of stealthiness to it. This weapon got a perfect score, if you are a terrorist and you see this on the ground then pick it up and prepare for you kills to jump.

    (CT)AUG - 1/2
This is the CT version of the SG-552 but with a 1.4x zoom.

    Scout -
This is the best sniper rifle in the game, if you are a good sniper, then please uses this instead of the AWP/M. It has really high accuracy mixed with medium power, 2 shots will take down anybody. The best part about this weapon, if you shoot then you know your bullet is going where you aimed at (which cant be said for the AWP). This weapon is perfect in every way; it's not too big like most other sniper rifles and its extremely accurate. It has 60 bullets in reserve and 10 in the clip, which is plenty, if you are a good sniper you should be reloading every round, and not a couple of times per round.

    Artic Warfare Police/Magnum (AWP) -
I am not a big fan of the AWP/M and I know a lot of people aren’t either, but some people feel that the AWP/M is the best rifle in the game.  I disagree.  It is a top sniper, rifle but it’s far from the better Scout. This weapon is horribly inaccurate when the target is close to you but better when they are far away, the thing I do hate is: when you think you are lined up with them, and you get hit by fire, you are going to miss the target all the time ... and that’s a pain in the ass.  The only good parts about this rifle are, it shoots through just about any one and anything with 1 bullet, and the range is very long. If they are close to you, you better take out the pistol or you will get owned.  I deducted one star because of the little inaccuracy issue when close and the reload isn’t all that fast for a sniper rifle. Tip: if you are going to use this then by a strong pistol for a back up weapon. Also, when you get the chance drop this weapon and pick up a better one, do it.

    G3 SG-1 -
DON'T BUY THIS WEAPON.  Its not worth the price.  Instead, go with the much cheaper Scout or even the AWP with a Deagle.  This weapon is horribly inaccurate close and over a distance and its rather weak for a sniper rifle.  I deducted four stars because of the inaccuracy, the reload, the power, reserve ammo, and the price.  In this case you really don't get what you paid for. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!

    SG-550 -
This weapon is a little better then the G3/SG1, but not by much.  It's a little less powerful and a little less accurate, but not by much.  I still say buy either the AWP/M or the Scout.  They are both better buys.  The best part about this weapon is it can go full auto when you have to ... that is a plus,, which is why I gave it two stars and not one.  I deducted three stars because of the power, the accuracy, range, price, and the reload speed, which is really slow.  AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!

    M249 Para -
100 ammo clips and 200 in reserve and high power makes this the best close combat weapon but with accuracy is down hill when you are not controlling your bursts. I deducted 3 stars because of the low accuracy and the very slow reload speed.

    Seal 2000 (Model 37) -
Ok, last night I completely changed my mind about the knife: I love it.  I killed 2 people with it and no body noticed a thing.  This is the ultimate tool to sneak up on snipers and campers.  Use it when ever possible.

    Playing Styles

There is 5 playing styles: Rush, Camp, Stealth, Snipe and Defend.  There is a big difference between them all so I will list them with a little explanation of each.
    • Rush: This playing style describes the guy who goes directly to the enemy or the objective, and will do it at all costs.  If you are new, I don't suggest doing this unless you are feeling lucky.

    • Camp: Believe it or not, camping is a legitimate tactic in this game. The only real way to defend against rushers, is to camp. When you camp, make sure you try to have somebody with you for cover, and never camp in the same spot for more then 2 rounds.

    • Defend: This is kind of like camping but you are not in one place for very long.  A lot of defensive players will hang back and guard objectives (i.e.: CT -Bomb Site.  T - Hostages).  Some will guard points where they think the enemy will come from.  Others will go from one bomb site to another, just to make sure no body has broken through the lines.

    • Snipe: Snipers are usually the people who will pick off the rushers and the stealthy. Snipers are a cross between campers and the stealthy, and will usually guard a place that they know the enemy will be coming from. My tip for the newbies, do not try to snipe until you know how to do it well, since being a sniper is very tricky.  If you see one of your teammates in the role of sniper, try to hang back with them to provide some cover.  This way, he will protect you and you can protect him.

    • Stealth: This is a cross between all of them. People who like to sneak around will rush but in a quiet manor so they wont be picked up by the snipers, until it is too late. The stealthy will also camp when they have to, and will pick off people one by one.  The best way to combat somebody who sneaks around, is to get to a place quicker then they do so you can ambush them when they least expect it.

    Basic Training:

These are a few very basic tips that everybody should know and use.
    1. Fire in controlled bursts: Know more then 5 bullets pre-button press any more and the recoil of the weapon will kick in.  If you go toe to toe with a guy, and you end up losing, it is either because you didn't take my words of advise and figured he didn't know crap, or he just over powered you.

    2. Be as sneaky as possible: Don't just rush into a room firing at random you wont hit anything and will most likely get your self killed.

    3. Listen for foot steps: A lot of people wont take my words of advise and will rush into a room, if you hear the sound of him running then you might be able to ambush him and get a quick and easy kill.

    4. Jumping is your friend: Always jump around a corner and after the jump go into a crouching position, this way you will be ready for anything that might be around the corner.

    5. Crouching: When you are at medium distance then crouch down when you shoot this will increase the accuracy of the weapon and the amount of hits the guy taken, if the guy is right in front of you though DON'T CROUCH.  I know it may sound stupid, but don't if you do it is easier for him to get a headshot.  I cant really tell you the distance because it all seems random so use your best judgment.

    6. Don't get into anybody's way: Don't get into anybody's way: If you are rushing with more then 3 people, don't try to get into any bodies way.  I know its hard to do but try not to anyway.  Try to stay a little ways away from them, but close enough to cover them.  Also, when a team mate is hiding, don't stand directly behind him or directly a side of him.  When he starts to take fire you will be in his escape path, and he will end up dyeing because of you.

    7. If you are all alone on a map don't be scared to camp:  Like I said before camping is a ligament tactic and when used right it could be very deadly for the opposing team.

    8. Radio commands: Don't be scared to use them.  If you are taking fire then say you are taking fire or if you are need back up then ask for it.  A lot of times somebody will come and help you,  but if they don't, then keep asking for it.  The same is true if somebody is asking for help.  If you are free and you are close, then go help them.  The best games I have played is when everybody used there radio commands and used them correctly.  Trust me; it can make all the difference.
TIP: Download the -= Clan Vicious=- Overlay - by clicking here.  With it you can bind all of your radio commands separately (each to it's own key if you wish).  Just make sure you remember what button says which.  You do not want to accidentally call off a rush.

    9. Reloading: Don't wait until you get down to your last bullet to reload, reload whenever you have time to and when you do reload take cover. Never reload out in the open it is the easiest way to get you head blown off.

    10. "Last weapon used": If you are in the middle of a fire fight quick switch to your side arm and finish them off with that. In the config menu, there is a "last weapon used" bind, make sure to bind it to a button that is close to you. Trust me on this, when you are in a heavy fire fight and you are out of ammo you will be glad that you bound that button.

Remember its a team game: Everything you do will affect your team and how they complete the objective at hand. Make a wrong choice and it could mean the round.  The best way to get the full potential out of CS is to join a clan (like our clan ... sorry cheap plug).  Clans offer the best cooperation that I have ever been involved with so pick a clan that you feel comfortable with (like our clan ... damn there I go again) and enjoy the game.

    Map Strategies:

The next guide involves a run down of all the objectives and the easiest way to complete them. The easiest way to win any round is to get to a choke point first, I have seen many rounds were one person holding down a choke point can make all the difference.
Each of these map strategies depends on how many team members are on your team. If there is less then 6 members on a team then decrease the team size for each group by 1 player (IE: so instead of 2 or 3 people in a group there should be 1 or 2 people in a group). I don't expect this to work on public servers so try these for clan battles or with a group of friends.

    DE_: Bomb/Defusal maps.

These are terrorist based maps were one terrorist with a bomb has to plant it at a particular site, there are usually 2 sites per DE_ map. The first is usually the CT spawn and the second usually isn't two far away.

Terrorist - If you have the bomb stick with at least 2 or 3 team members and always rush towards the bombsite not stopping for anything. The rest should take an alternate route just in case the first team fails the second can clean up. If the CTs tend to rush every round then don't be scared to camp, remember it is always easier to plant the bomb with 1 or 2 CTs then 4 or more. When planting the bomb make sure your team is providing cover just in case a CT comes by your team can eliminate him post hast, also try to get the bomb planted in an out of reach area or a place that is high up (if you need to ask a team mate for a boost then do it just don't take too long trying to plant it), this way if there is 1 CT left it is impossible for him to defuse it or even find it.

Counter-Terrorists - Break up into two teams, the first team stays at the spawn (or the first bomb site) and the second team goes toward the second bomb site. Know matter what happens always stick together, if the terrorists don't start to move then sneak around and make sure to check all of the camping spots just in case it is a trap. Always listen for either foot steps or grenades going off this is a sure sign that the terrorists are on there way. You also might want to have somebody work as a free lance so he can go back and worth between the 2 groups to make sure everything is going good. When defusing the bomb time is against you and if there is any Ts left then you are in for double duty so make sure you have cover and if you are alone then duck down and try to take cover when defusing it so they cant hit you in the head. Also make sure you have a defuse kit with you because it takes less then a second to defuse with one. I suggest downloading the bomb timer from http://www.nextwish.org/mods/sound/cstrike-c4timer.shtml  this makes it so you can hear how much time is left and not go by the ticking noise.

    AS_:  Assassination maps

These are very CT based maps and one of the hardest objectives to complete.

Counter-Terrorists - One person is the VIP, he has 200 armor and a USP45 pistol. Its the job of the rest of the team to protect him until he reaches any of two escape points. The best idea is to have a team of about 2 or 3 sweep the map to take out any snipers or stray Ts that might make it hard for the VIP to escape, the second team stays with the VIP and doesn't leave him for anything. If the VIP is "assassinated" the CTs lose the round. A person is VIP for 3 rounds then it goes to another.

Terrorists - This should be a breeze for a good T team. Take about 1 or 2 snipers with an AWP/M or a Scout and have them guard both escape locations and to also shoot at any CTs you happen to see while providing some cover for the rest of the Ts. The rest of the Ts should be sweeping the map and looking for any CTs, if you see the VIP request for backup this way the rest of the Ts no where the general location of the VIP is.  If he is with a group of CTs concentrate all of your efforts on the VIP and not on the CTs guarding him.  If you didn't kill him you are least wounded him and with the radio command message the rest of the Ts should be on there way to kill the him.

    CS_: Hostages rescue maps

These are personally my favorite type of maps. These maps are very T based map.

Terrorist - It is you job to guard the hostages. So have 1 or 2 Ts stay with them at all times no matter what happens, have another T up to a high place with an AWP or a Scout. The rest of the Ts should be sweeping the map and taking out any CTs.

Counter-Terrorist - It is your job to rescue the hostages from the terrorist. The easiest way to do that is to split up into 2 groups. One group go one way and the other group go the other way. In both groups you should at least one person with an AWP or a Scout and everybody should be packing an HE grenade, 2 Flashbangs and a Smoke grenade. When rushing out have one person through a Smoke grenade so the sniper cant get you, then have a couple of CTs throw flashbangs just in case the first one fizzes out.. The second team should be slowly sneaking up to the hostages with out shooting. Team one is acting like a distraction and the second team is doing the actual rescuing. When rescuing the hostages, 1 person take 2 hostages and the other take the other 2 hostages with at least 1 person providing some cover. When running to the rescue point always have some one run in front of you so he can draw what every Ts that happen to be camping out of their hiding places and into the open. If the CT taking 2 hostages gets to the rescue point first, then kill the other two hostages. You will lose money but your team will get a mess load of money for completing the objective.
