Skins   -   Updated 21/04/2003

Updates

RhythmKing has kindly donated a new ak and there is a very fine usp too [4/8/02]

A couple of new carbines [the Aug is particularly funky] and a shotgun to scare the neighbours with [15/4/02]

Sub-machine guns [or machine pistols - call them what you will] are the weapon of choice this month. We have three splendid examples for you to choose from; mac10, p90 or tmp. Take your pick or go for all three in our super bargain discount.

Now that the sun has reappeared I have come out of hibernation. There is a new AK available and a great Sig to keep it company [3/3/02]

Squid is having a knife fetish this month and suggested these... [03/01/02]

Now that the skins pc is running smoothly once more there is a new knife skin out to celebrate [9/12/01].

For week ending 17 Aug 2001 there is another batch rollout with new entries in pistols, sub-machine guns, shotguns, rifles and carbines. The new deagle, scout and usp [masquerading as a particularly fine silenced glock] are my personal favourites.

As of week ending 3 Aug 2001 there are some new skins; a glock, mac10, mp5 and para. I particularly recommend the mac10 and mp5.

Rationale

The Skins section of cs-maps was conceived in order to provide accessible, easy to use, tested skins. Having downloaded a few skins in the past I noticed that they were all zipped in different ways. Here they have been recompiled such that you only have to unzip to your c: drive [if you installed Half-Life somewhere other than c: or in a non-standard fashion then you can figure it out for yourself]. A further bonus is not having to go through half-a-dozen links to reach a file location. All skins have been run on my machine and any that I was not happy with do not appear on the website.

Backup

I recommend that you backup your cstrike directory before trying any skins. This means that you can replace some or all of your old skins after trying some new ones. A regular cstrike folder with maybe a few extra maps will zip down to about 90 Meg.

Instructions

Most skins can be simply extracted to c: and will overwrite the old files. However, some skins include a modification to the hud.txt file [stored in c:\SIERRA\Half-Life\cstrike\sprites] and a little more effort is required to install them. There are instructions in each zipped skin on how to install but essentially you open the hud.txt file and edit the relevant line [you did make a backup first didn't you? There is a nice clean hud.txt here if you need it]
Skins which require a hud modification are marked thus [*hud]

Notes

If you use a skin which employs a suppressor where the original weapon was not silenced - other people not using the same skin can still hear you shooting while you can not hear them firing at you!

AK47

A great gun. Make sure the loudest end is pointing away from you.
I have yet to see a better skin for this weapon. It will have to be a high resolution version because to make any significant changes would be sacrilege. If you have a hi-resolution skin for the AK - send it my way!

Best regards

Aguillar
